YFEL courses form part of an annual schedule of four courses on Technology, Policy and Leadership that cover renewable energy-related issues in environmental engineering and management. The courses target young practitioners and graduate students who aim to expand their knowledge of core issues in the areas of renewable energy technology and policy.

Led by experts from faculty and industry professionals, whose rich insights bring a new dimension to the learning experience of the participants, the courses’ objective is to develop full-fledged professionals, well-versed in all the areas of clean energy to remain future industry leaders.

Waste Management & Waste To Energy WATER, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY Fabrication & Characterization Of Solar Cell Devices POLICY – ROLE OF POLICY IN RENEWABLE ENERGY ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE BEING A FUTURE LEADER

Waste Management & Waste To Energy

This course addresses the challenges of waste management, particularly in the trans-developing world where average daily per-capita waste generation varies between 250g and 6kg. It reviews waste management trends, from conventional “dry tomb” landfills to bioreactor-based technologies. The different technologies for transforming waste into added-value products are discussed, from high temperature gasification to intermediate temperature pyrolysis to near-room-temperature biophysical and biological waste treatment technologies such as fermentation and anaerobic digestion.

WATER, SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

This course offers the participants an overview of the water situation in the UAE, as well as an introduction to the technical issues associated to water resources estimation, analysis, planning and management. Additionally, participants will be prepared for more advanced activities related to specific issues such as statistical hydrology, deterministic hydrology, or risk analysis in water resources.

It introduces desalination technologies, the various processes and their integration with alternative energy resources (as solar and nuclear), and focuses on the global water shortages and demonstrates how the application of membrane technology can provide modern tools for further cost reduction, in addition to providing an overview of membrane separation process including membrane classifications, and challenges facing this technology.

Fabrication & Characterization Of Solar Cell Devices

This course offers the YFEL members an opportunity to widen their knowledge base in solar energy technology. It aims to hone the skills of YFEL members in solar energy-related technologies and offered them an opportunity to conduct experiments at the Masdar Institute laboratories.

Participants will learn about solar cell technology and the fabrication processes for various types of solar cell technology. They will also participate in a hands-on lab-based session together with a field visits.

POLICY – ROLE OF POLICY IN RENEWABLE ENERGY

Effective policy measures are the right instruments to take clean technology deployment further. As future energy industry leaders, the YFEL members need to be provided the right ingredients to develop into effective professionals. The insightful perspectives on policy issues provided at the training program equip and strengthen their skill sets for becoming accomplished future leaders in the energy industry.

The course highlights the need for effective policy interventions to stimulate clean technology research, development, demonstration and deployment (RDD&D) while helping to overcome economic and structural barriers for clean technology deployment.

Focusing on the design of sustainable energy policy for complex energy economic systems and the financial strategies to promote clean tech investment, the course offers students an introductory view on managing technology in high-tech industries through the discussion of a case-study.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSE

This course covers a wide range of topics about entrepreneurship, like Ethics and Social Responsibility Challenges for Entrepreneurs, Intellectual Properties, and Entrepreneurship Mindset. Participants will be exposed to professionals, experts, and individuals who are entrepreneur leaders.

The course introduces students to the basic legal protections available for intellectual property. By protecting innovation through the application of IP law, the entrepreneur adds significant value to company assets. It also provides a real world example of the entrepreneurial mindset and provides students with an understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship from both entrepreneur and investor perspectives. As well as understanding the barriers to clean technology deployment and the various policies, this course measures available addressed barriers. The interplay between technologies and policies will be elaborated within the context of both technology push and market pull dynamics. The practical implication of such dynamics will be provided via a case study on renewable energy deployment in a major European economy.

BEING A FUTURE LEADER

These two courses are designed to help mentor future leaders by engaging them with the leaders of today, and feature lectures by outstanding experts and a Q&A session with a prominent UAE national leader.

The courses are an exclusive opportunity for participants to learn from experts and decision-makers about leadership and teamwork skills, with a particular emphasis on the importance of time and resource management and lifelong learning.

The YFEL program has been established to serve as a platform for engaging students and young professionals in local and international events and activities. YFEL aims to educate and inspire participants to become future leaders capable of solving the world’s most pressing challenges in advanced energy and sustainability.
