The Young Future Energy Leaders (YFEL) Program is Khalifa University’s flagship outreach program in the field of sustainability. YFEL is designed to take university students and young professional through a series of activities that expands their understanding of alternative energy and sustainability, nurturing in them a deep understanding of the central role and relevance of alternative energy and sustainability to the enduring future of Abu Dhabi, the UAE and the world at large.
This unique program helps mentor future leaders in the fields of alternative energy by engaging them with the leaders of today. YFEL also offers young professionals and students from the UAE and abroad the opportunity to become more engaged in finding solutions to the world’s biggest challenges – energy efficiency and climate change.
Each new cohort of the YFEL program kicks off during the annual World Future Energy Summit, which is held every January in Abu Dhabi during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week. The YFEL members engage in debate and discussions about the future of energy and seek sustainable solutions to the challenges of climate change.
Entry into the program is selective and highly competitive. Prospective candidates, from the UAE and around the world, need to demonstrate not only interest in future energy and sustainable development, but the talent to make a real and ongoing contribution at the highest level.
Enabled by fresh insights and new connections, our Young Energy Leaders will go on to become future world leaders.

International students join YFEL though a nomination process sent to select universities. However, each year, several students may be welcomed to join YFEL through self-nomination. This self-nomination is highly competitive. Interested international students may contact YFEL for application details at YFEL@masdar.ac.ae
In 2017, UAE President and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, issued a decree to merge the Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research, the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, and The Petroleum Institute under one university called the Khalifa University of Science and Technology (Khalifa University).
